This week, we caught up with Amanda Freeman, the owner of NYC’s hottest new studio  SLT.  As female entrepreneurs, we really look up to Amanda for her success first co-founding Vital Juice and now launching SLT.  Two great fitness ventures – she is a girl after our own heart!

SLT is new to the NY fitness scene - how  do you describe it to newbies?

My elevator pitch is "Pilates on crack".  But, it's so much more than that.  It's a unique combination of cardio, strength training and Pilates that can only be done on the amazing Megaformer.

Why did you open the SLT studio?

I fell in love with the workout in LA and couldn't understand why something so effective and so popular in LA hadn't made its way to NY yet.  I was tired of having to take a 6-hour flight to get to my favorite workout. :)

SLT is by no means your first business venture. What did you learn from your previous businesses that you brought to founding SLT?

My first job, as a trend forecaster and market researcher, taught me how to identify opportunities that will resonate with consumers.  My business school experience provided me with the tools to start and run a business - everything from accounting to hiring.  My first start-up (The Experience Club - don't ask) taught me how important a good business model is.  And my experience co-founding and running Vital Juice (the healthy living daily email) immersed me in the world of health and wellness.  Without each of these experiences SLT would not have happened.

What are your current fitness goals?

Thanks to SLT, I am in the best shape of my life (not bad for 35) and I would like to keep that going as long as I can.  I've always worried about bulking up, so I am focused on getting strong and toned without getting bigger.  I like having muscle definition, but not going overboard.

If only I could eat better!

What are you looking forward to in 2012?

I can't wait to grow SLT through more locations!  I want more NY'ers to see the amazing results of the workout.  Wish these real estate deals didn't take so long.

How do you stay positive when things get tough?

It's impossible to always be positive, but my life experiences to date offer me perspective on hardships and challenges.  I have learned that nothing is as big of a deal as you at first think and that time heals all.  As Kelly Clarkson says..."What doesn't kill you makes you stronger."

What healthy recipes are you obsessed with these days?

Sadly, I am a one trick pony in the kitchen.  Quinoa and veggie stir-fry is my specialty!

You have seen it all in the world of fitness between Vital Juice and now SLT, what are your go-to products?

Thera-Roll - The Thera-Roll is the foam roller on crack!  It hurts so good and is great on tight IT bands, quads, name it!

Blake Brody Studio Shoes - The ultimate footwear for SLT, bar classes, Pilates or even yoga.  They allow you to be stylish while being sanitary, comfortable and safe.

Aviator Nation - Since I now wear exercise clothes every day, all day, I am tweaking my  wardrobe to be appropriate both in and out of the studio.  My new favorite brand is Aviator Nation.

How do you spend your off day?

I haven't had a day off since we opened in September.  If I did have one, I'd go for a run in the park, meet a friend for brunch, and go to a movie.  Seems like a dream to me now!
