Summertime Frozen Snacks: 4 Healthy & Sweet Treats

When the heat is on and the sun is out, having cooling, icy treats helps keep your energy high and your temperature low. It’s easy to reach for those summer treats that are packed with sugar and fat (ice cream bars, frappuccinos, or ice pops), but tasty treats don’t have to be unhealthy. Here are 4 recipes for icy sweets that will keep you cool and satisfy your cravings.

1 – Pear Avocado Smoothie
Quarter, pit and peel 1 ripe Hass avocado. Then, in a blender mix together the avocado, ½ cup silken tofu (drained), 1 cup pear juice, 2 tablespoons honey, and ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract until smooth. Add 2 cups ice and blend again until smooth. Makes 4 yummy smoothies.

2 – Cucumber Basil Ice Cubes
Combine together 1 cup water, 1 cucumber (peeled and seeded), ¼ cup torn basil, and a pinch of coarse salt in a blender. Pour into an ice-cube tray and freeze. Drop into a glass of soda water for an extra tasty and refreshing drink.

3 – Creamy Blackberry Smoothie
In a blender, mix together 3 cups blackberries, 1 cup low-fat yoghurt, 1 cup low-fat buttermilk, 3 tablespoons honey, and 1 pinch ground cardamom on high until smooth. Pour into a glass, dust with a bit of cinnamon and enjoy.

4 – Banana Ice

Add ½ cup sugar and 1 ½ cup water to a saucepan and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and cool. Then, transfer to an 8-inch square dish and mix with the juice from 3 oranges & 3 lemons, 1 small 8-ounce can of crushed pineapple, and 3 bananas (cut into small pieces). Freeze for at least 3 hours; then, remove from freezer about 20 minutes prior to serving. The mixture should be a bit “slushy”. Disperse into bowls or cups to serve, and top with a bit of club soda and garnish with mint sprigs.
